Monterey Pine, Radiata Pine
Pinus radiata
Monterey Pines are one of the most dominant and prevalent trees on the Monterey peninsula. They are ancient trees that have inhabited this continent for millions of years, having shifted geographically from place to place throughout the eons due to climatic changes. However, in recent geological history, Monterey Pines are native/endemic to only a very small and limited area near and around Monterey, and limited other island locations in Mexico. However, today Pinus radiata is cultivated all over the world.
I have read that Pinus radiata gets it name from its “radiating” whorls of pinecones that grow often in circles around branches.
Pine needles are in clusters of three, and pinecones contain pine nuts that are apparently edible, like other species of pine trees. (Disclaimer: be mindful of any potential allergies you might have to foods you’ve never tried.)
