Coast Redwood, Coastal Redwood, California Redwood

Sequoia sempervirens

Coast Redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) are recognized as being among the tallest and largest trees on the planet, with the largest trees being Giant Sequoias (Sequoiadendron giganteum). The Coast Redwood is the sole surviving species within the genus Sequoia, which is in the subfamily Sequoioideae, of the Cupressaceae family. Giant Sequoias, not to be confused with Coast Redwoods, are both in the subfamily Sequoioideae, and thus are somewhat like cousins or relatives.

The beauty and grandeur of Redwoods cannot be captured solely through photographs. One must stand next to one fully appreciate their awesome size and beauty. Coast redwoods can reach heights nearing 400 ft tall, and the oldest redwoods reach ages of approximately 2,200 years old.

I have read that redwood forests store more carbon than any other forest ecosystem, making them an essential tree in balancing out harmful human activities on Earth.
